History

RIFL AND RINA BACKGROUND

The RIFL was formed in 1972, when the Murray Football Association B Grade was renamed to create the Riverland Independent Football League. The Competition started with 6 teams; Cobdogla, Browns-Well, Lyrup, Moorook-Kingston, Paringa and Wunkar. An addition of a 7th team was East Murray in 1994.

In 2009, Ramco joined the league from the Mid Murray Association which sparked Blanchetown Swan Reach to follow in 2010. Both clubs needed some re-branding to join the RIFL and created what you see today. The league peaked with 9 teams in the competition with 16 rounds and a very competitive finals series.

2013 saw East Murray fold, and 2015 was the last time we saw Moorook-Kingston take to the field. In 2016, Sedan Cambrai joined the league where they would be come regulars in the finals series in both football and netball. Lyrup played their last game in 2018.

2020 saw no football being played as COVID-19 hit the world, standing still with a 7 team competition. The return to community sport in 2021 was well received, and saw Cobdogla take a break and the competition returning to 6 teams.

In 2022, the idea of the Riverland Independent Football and Independent Netball joining to create a new league was starting to get traction and the MVFNL was born. Murrayville was an addition to the new league, joining due to the Mallee Football League collapsing. The 7 team competition is looking very strong for an exciting season in 2023.
